In this chapter we’ll be outlining the standard sizing ratio to start off with for both men’s & women’s tees, and why it’s important.

SIZING RATIO

  1. What is it.
  2. Why it’s important.
  3. How to use it.
  4. Baseline templates for men’s & women’s.

Sizing ratio is how many of each size shirt you actually sell, which should tell you how many you should order. Each brand is different, and no brand sells just as many larges as they do smalls, it’s never a flat scale, it’s always a bell curve, meaning you should never split any order evenly across all sizes.

Predicting the apparel sizing ratio for your shirt orders is one of those things that seems simple, as in, “oh, I’ll just order more larges and XL’s than smalls and 3XL’s”, and it IS simple in theory, but the more you dive into how to actually account for and apply the data, the more nuanced, detailed, and potentially confusing it can get.

The sizing ratio is always a bell curve, not a straight line, but that bell curve changes based on the demographics of the market the brand is in, and even the color and designs within the same brand will sell at slightly different sizing ratios.

One of the most costly mistakes most new brand owners make is just ordering a flat number of each size, straight across the sizing line, Small through 2XL, without accounting for the curve.

You’ll end up with way too many of some sizes, and not nearly enough of others.
